How frequently should you replace your vape coil?
Johnny Brown - August 28, 2025Vape coils are not immortal. They all degrade over time, clog up and burn out, and the outcome is normally a loss of flavour, vapour or general performance. Understanding when to swap your vape coil can prevent unpleasant-tasting puffs, squandered e-liquid and frustration with your device.
There’s no one-size-fits-all rule because how long a coil lasts is based on how many times you vape, what e-liquid you vape, and what coil your tank has. For most average vapers, a coil will last anywhere from a couple of days to a week or two. Heavy vapers or people who use sweet, heavy e-liquids will often find that they need to change theirs sooner. Conversely, regular users sometimes may be able to extend the life of coils slightly.
It is all a matter of noticing the way your vape tastes and feels. Once you are aware of the warning signs, it is easy to know when you need to make the switch.
Signs Your Coil Needs Replacing
The most prevalent indication of an expended coil is an altered flavour. If your vape all of a sudden tastes flat, or the flavour is not as pungent as it was previously, your coil is most likely expired. If it has a burnt taste or is harsh, the cotton within the coil has most likely been burnt and must be replaced immediately.
Something else to watch out for is decreased vapour output. If you’re not producing the same clouds, even when fully charged and tanked up, the coil may not be heating up anymore. Occasionally it just seems like the vape is trying hard or taking longer to produce vapour.
You.ll also find your coil losing more liquid than normal or making strange noises — clicking, spitting or gurgling. These are usually indicators the coil isn’t drinking the liquid as it should or that it’s getting flooded some instances, cleaning will get the job done, but if it continues to happen, changing the coil is generally the faster solution.
A shift in the draw is also a giveaway. If it is becoming too tight or too airy than usual, and you haven’t changed your settings or airflow, your coil could be clogged with gunk or beginning to deteriorate.
What Affects Coil Life
Some things can make your coil last shorter or longer. The e-liquid you use is one. Sweet or dark liquids deposit more residue and clog coils more quickly. High-VG juices are thicker and will also stress out some coils more, particularly if your device can’t keep up with them.
The way you vape makes a difference too. Vaping slow, long drags back to back does not allow the coil time to soak up more liquid between hits. This will result in dry hits less often, which burn the cotton and destroy the coil rapidly. If you vape like this regularly, look forward to changing coils more frequently.
The wattage level is crucial as well. Operating your device outside the recommended range will degrade your coil faster or perhaps burn out the coil totally. Keeping within the recommended range ensures that both flavour and coil longevity are maintained.
Keeping your tank filled and refilled before it runs out can also help. When the liquid level is too low, the wick will evaporate and burn — even if only for an instant. That’s usually all it takes to ruin the coil.
A Good Routine to Follow
You don’t need to replace your coil at any regular interval, but it’s worth looking at every few days if you vape frequently. A well-cleansed, good-functioning coil ought to produce a clear, smooth flavour and even vapour. As soon as this begins to decrease, replace it. Most coils aren’t very pricey and are simple to change, and staying on top of it makes your vape reliable and enjoyable.
